Design is dialogue…

We love to collaborate with our clients to create work that makes an emotional connection to real communities.

We are design professionals with a depth of experience in creating cutting edge cultural environments, community based developments, and successful brand strategies. Our founder, Phil Otto completed his studies in cultural anthropology at Stanford University, as well as advanced studies in human development from Pacific Oaks of Pasadena before embarking on our journey of making memorable spaces.  This point of view informs the work we do and influences our approach to place making and experience.

Otto Design Group was founded in 1990 to explore the intersection between design, art, culture and enterprise. We have always maintained a dialogue between these interconnected worlds while bringing a unique point of view to the built expressions. Having assembled a world-class team of anthropologists, architects, designers and artists, Otto Design Group has completed major projects for many of today’s leading brands worldwide including REI, Urban Outfitters, Levi's, Coca-Cola, Puma, Warby Parker, Free People, Paramount Coffee Project, Anthropologie, Sidecar Donuts, Wexler's Deli, to name a few...

Our current areas of interest and inquiry include: Culture and Community, Retail Design and Urban Renewal, Online Social Groups and the new need to gather in places that celebrate the unique qualities of the locale. We are very interested and involved in the emerging field of cyber anthropology as well. The study of online communities can be undertaken with great results using a skill set rooted in cultural anthropology. Much of our recent work revolves around this aspect of analysis.
